In the summer of 2015, I completed a 10-week placement in Santa Marta, El Salvador with ADES and Progressio ICS. The hardest part of the whole experience was leaving the community and all the incredible people I had met during my time there. I made a promise to come back. The ICS experience really made an impact on the return to the UK and I decided that the time was right to quit my job and change my career path to one related to international development. Before this, it was time to fulfil that promise and return to Santa Marta.
I spent my first couple of days in silence when I arrived to Santa Marta; it was a shock of being here again mixed with the heat. It was time to start working and through my facilitator at the local partner organisation ADES, I had the opportunity to go back and fix a kiosk that our cycle had built that had some damage. Complete with my previous national Team Leaders, it was back to mixing chalk, cement and sand to make a super plaster to cover the plaster that had fallen off and making the kiosk water tight for next winter.
The continued support of the in-country Progressio El Salvador team has been incredible. Through Susy and Carmen, I got the opportunity to spend a couple of days working with the current cycle of Progressio ICS volunteers that are in Santa Catarina Masahuat. Having given the group a short three-hour presentation during their pre-departure training, it was really good being able to see how they were getting on and join their team. I supported on their first outing making cob and managed to fit in a quick Zumba session.
Aside from this, I’ve had the time to enjoy Santa Marta. I’m staying with the same host family I did last time and they continue to be incredible, supportive and laugh at how I can’t cope with the heat. I also spend the afternoons working in Sueños de Madera, a local wood workshop run by young people, some of which are my friends from the cycle. Some things may have changed in Santa Marta but it continues to be a community built on supporting others.
I remember during the first time in Santa Marta that one day we were unpacking our bags in our host homes, ten weeks went by in a flash and then it was time to leave. There are so many opportunities to get involved with during an ICS cycle that you don’t often get time to reflect on what’s going on until after it has all happened. I think this opportunity to go back has given me the closure I needed after the end of an incredible cycle. I still can’t believe how fortunate I was to get selected for an ICS placement, to go to Santa Marta and to have been placed in a cycle with some incredible national volunteers and an incredible host family. Thank you ICS and Progressio for giving me a life changing opportunity; I can’t believe I get to do it again as a Team Leader in Honduras in September.

El Oso regresa
En el verano de 2015, yo terminé un ciclo de trabajo con ADES y Progressio ICS en Santa Marta, El Salvador. Una de las partes más difícil de toda la experiencia fue dejar la comunidad y todas las personas increíbles a quien las he conocido durante mi tiempo allí. Yo hice una promesa de volver. La experiencia de ICS me cambió mucho y decidí de dejar mi puesto y cambiar mi carrera por una relacionada con el desarrollo internacional. Antes de eso, era el tiempo para lograr la promesa y volver a Santa Marta.
Cuando volví a Santa Marta, pasé los primeros días en silencio, por el choque de estar aquí de nuevo con la mezcla del calor. Había trabajo por hacer y a través de mi facilitadora en la organización local ADES, tuve la oportunidad de volver y arreglar un quiosco que hemos construido que se había estropeado. En un equipo con mis previos líderes nacionales, hicimos la mezcla de cal, cemento y arena para crear un repello súper para cubrir el repello que cayo. Una vez más el quiosco está listo para la temporada lluviosa.
El apoyo del equipo nacional de Progressio El Salvador sigue siendo increíble. A través de Susy y Carmen, tuve la oportunidad de pasar algunos días trabajando con el ciclo actual de voluntarios y voluntarias de Progressio ICS que están trabajando en Santa Catarina Masahuat. Era bueno tener la oportunidad al ver el grupo y ser parte del equipo sobre todo después de darles una presentación corta de tres horas durante la formación antes que se fueron a su proyecto. Apoyé durante su primer intento con cob y hubo tiempo suficiente para una clase de Zumba.
A pesar de eso, he tenido el tiempo para disfrutar de Santa Marta. Me quedé con la misma familia de acogida, la cual continúa siendo increíble, ofrece apoyo y esta vez se reía sobre el hecho de que no puedo soportar el calor. Pasé las tardes trabajando en Sueños de Madera, un taller de madera donde trabajan jóvenes y amigos míos del ciclo. Algunas cosas cambiaron en Santa Marta pero todavía es una comunidad donde las personas se apoyan unas a las otras.
Durante mi ciclo en Santa Marta recuerdo el primer día cuando estuvimos quitando las cosas de nuestro equipaje, diez semanas pasaron y de repente era el momento de salir. Hay tantas oportunidades para involucrarse durante un ciclo de ICS que no se tiene tiempo para reflejarse hasta que termina todo. Esa oportunidad para volver me ha dado el cierre que necesitaba después de un ciclo increíble. Todavía no puedo crear la suerte que he tenido en hacer parte de ICS, en tener la oportunidad de ir a Santa Marta y en tener un ciclo con voluntarios/as nacionales y una familia increíble. Gracias a ICS y Progressio por darme una oportunidad para cambiar la vida; no puedo creer que tengo la oportunidad de hacerlo de nuevo en Honduras, en septiembre, y como lider ICS.
